SOCIETY IN THE MIDDLE AGES

SOCIETY IN THE MIDDLE AGES

During the Middle Ages the entertainment available depended greatly on which social class you were born into (except the clergy).

POPULATION
Feudal System: it began in the 9th century.

                      Social Classes:

The King was on the top of the social system, other social classes were:

1. The nobility/ military.
2. The clergy/ religious.
      3. The peasants/ farmers.*

*It is the largest group and they worked to provide for the other two groups.

The nobility and the clergy were privileged classes, because they didn't work, they didn't pay taxes...
The peasants didn't have privileges.

Feudalism was the main political, social and economic system in Western Europe during the period from the ninth to the thirteenth century.

The lord of the fief would protect the peasants, but in return he took over the land, charged the peasants taxes and was charge of justice.

The system of feudalism extended throughout Europe from the coasts of the North Sea to the Mediterranean and from the Atlantic coasts to the Russian plains.

The land was divided into many kingdoms and there, there were kings to govern over all the territory.
